Unforgettable African Safari: Hemingways Nairobi, Angama Amboseli, and Angama Mara

Part 1: KENYA

I just returned from Kenya and Rwanda, and as always, Africa thrilled me!

Hemingways Nairobi is becoming my de facto home while in Nairobi, and while there I returned to Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to see Mzinga, my adopted orphan elephant. I also never tire of the Giraffe Center where you can hand-feed the endangered Rothschild giraffes.

After Nairobi, I headed to Amboseli and a stay at the spectacular Angama Amboseli lodge, which was named to Conde Nast Travellers 2024 HOT List. And rightfully so! Loved the design and the killer views of Mt Kilimanjaro from my suite and pretty much anywhere. The lodge is situated just outside Amboseli in the Kimana elephant corridor, so I wasn’t expecting to see not one but two cheetahs!

Check out my suite tour at Angama Amboseli-the roof is made of canvas like a tent, but there are walls, doors, windows. A HUGE bathroom with an indoor and outdoor shower. Not roughing it!

One of the things I liked best about Angama Amboseli is that they employ Alice, a female game guide-a rarity in all of Kenya (see her below!). And I loved the onsite photography studio, art gallery and basket weaving studio run by local Masai women. And the Masai welcome every evening around the fire.

I then flew to the Masai Mara and stayed at their sister property Angama Mara. The location, high up on an escarpment overlooking the Mara, has jaw-dropping views. You truly can see for miles and miles and miles……It is where scenes from Out of Africa were shot, including the actual movie poster.

Angama Mara also has a photography studio and a basket-weaving studio run by the “Masai Mamas” in addition to a very unique and cool Map Room (hey, I used to work at National Geographic!).

I had a dreamy, once-in-a-lifetime day full of special experiences while at Angama Mara:

-Hot Air Balloon ride at sunrise over the Mara (incredible!) with champagne breakfast in the bush afterwards

-A walking safari with the resident Masai naturalist, who took us to the exact spot where Meryl Streep and Robert Redford have a picnic in Out of Africa. And when we arrived on foot, a tower of giraffes (that’s what you call a group of giraffes) was standing right there in front of us. Magical.

We then hiked up a hill and waiting for us at the very top was champagne and canapes and a blanket and pillows spread out on a rock outcropping (think Lion’s Rock in The Lion King) overlooking the Mara. It was sunset AND there was a photographer there to take pics of us as well. What a place for a marriage proposal or romantic honeymoon picnic dinner!

-When we hiked down, a jeep was waiting for to take us to a candlelight dinner in the bush. Surrounded by lanterns and white tablecloths and china, I felt like I was IN Out of Africa. A chef cooking everything outside over fire, including the bread, laid out a scrumptious meal of steak, fish, chicken, and organic salad from their own garden. The jeep magically appeared again after dinner to take us back to the lodge, where a dessert buffet was waiting along with liquors and a roaring fire.

This all happened in a single day. ONE day!

Rwanda deserves its own post, on its way!

If an African safari has always been on your bucket list, please feel free to reach out as it’s a destination specialty of mine!
